chaos in milano streets
A complete chaos in Milano!!! A whole (rainy) day of strike in the public transportation network!
If Italian traffic is known by its drivers craziness I can’t tell what it was like today.
There was no space in the streets where I could ride my bike. Cars where almost touching each other, barely flowing like a river of mud. -

John Lemon
Esselunga is probably the biggest supermarket chain in Italy, and surely the funniest.
It’s Advertising Campaign, created by Armando Testa, wanted to emphasize that Esselunga’s products were “famous for its quality”.
Fruits and vegetables sold there are so special that each one is a famous personality.
John Lemon is a good example of one of them! -

back from vacation!!!
Hello everybody…
I’m finally back from my vacation!!! (not back to broadband yet… but anyway…)
Lorenzo and I spent 3 wonderful weeks with his family! Here are the highlights of our trip:
One week in Miami: “resort lifestyle”, sun, 3 minutes rain, green all over, 32C outside, 15C inside, getting a cold…, sea, swimming pool, highways, always going by car, Hummers, Krispy Kream donuts, Isabel news on CNN, pampiro, Middla, driving an automatic car for the first time, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” TV show, Don Pan, Abercrombie and Fitch, GAP, malls, Romero Britto, IHOP, Modjito, hablando espaol por toda parte, taking more than an hour to complete check-in and pass through airport security after almost undressing myself…
10 days in Caracas: sun, 3 minutes rain, green all over, 30C outside, 22C inside, suffering the cold I got in Miami, 2,00 to put gas in the car, wedding party part-1, parrilla, family reunions, dinners, carne mechada, arepa, unfortunately no chicha this time, Nobu - a nice japanese restaurant, Consolato Generale d’Italia a Caracas, fresh fruit juices, nice and smiling people, crazy traffic going up and down.
3 day weekend in Isla Margarita: sun and green, no rain this time, 32C outside, 32C inside, one day sick inside hotel’s room, wonderful beach, white sand, eating fish food, 60 SPF cream, wedding party part-2, whole day in bikini and pareo, using sandals, Papa, Juan Griego Juan Griego, Tututanga logo (see Lorbus post), meeting Lorenzo’s old friends.
Statistics: We left Milano with only 2 carry-on’s 9kg each, and came back with the same carry-on’s, plus one duffel bag of 13kg, and Lorenzo’s guitar. In total we passed through 7 take-off’s and landings. In 20 days we spent 25 hours flying and other 14 hours wanting in airports. 2 days we spent sick on bed, I spent 12 days with cough, for 3 days I got sore throat and couldn’t speak at all and 9 days I had a sexy low voice. As you can see… we had such a great time!!!

The geisha world
I have just finished to read Geisha, a Life, by Mineko Iwazaki, which turned out to be a delightful night reading.Mineko was one of the most successful geisha (geiko as it is called in Kyoto) of her generation. In this auto-biography she presents the fascinating Japanese geisha world, and makes clear the real function of geisha: artist women instead of mistress.

Clube do Tom is an official meeting point for fans. You can find the discography, lyrics, curiosities, and even original recordings to listen.
I found Jobim’s original handwriting for the song “Aguas de Marco” interesting and graphically beautiful. Published in 1972 in occasion of its first recording, in the “Pasquim” newspaper, Rio de Janeiro.

The Italian Job
The Italian Job, 2003, by Gary Gray. With Mark Walberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton.
Action movie, the perfect entertainment, as its meaning: “something diverting or engaging” (Merrian-Websters Online).
Thieves, gold, speed, traitor, explosions, car chases, with a nice screen play and famous actors. -

The Big One
The Big One, 1998, by Michael Moore.
It is the third of Moore’s films that we see. We started with the blockbusting Bowling for Columbine (2002), that was a punch in the face. A portrait of contemporary american behavior and (for me) an introduction for their politics.
We liked Moore and his serious-critique-with-irony-and-fun style so much that we ended up seeing Roger&Me (1989) a couple of months later. Also a really good movie.
Finally yesterday we saw The Big One. As we could expect, he is simply genius the way he presents his cause, and you feel completely involved. The dirty things you always knew that surrounded us gets more clear. -

Italian vacation
Milano in August is completely deserted. Everybody is out of town, everything is closed including shops, bakeries, and bars. Almost every company closes its doors and doesn’t even answer its phones. All workers take their annual vacation at the same time! It is incredible how in the year 2003, Italy - a G7 member - can sustain a 20 day “general-strike” once a year!

Naked Lunch
1991, by David Cronenberg.
A surrealistic movie: I would suggest not to try to go in depth with the meanings… it is hard to understand what the hell is going on!
But it is really fun if you simply enjoy the crazy events that happens with the main character.
Here is a nice review I agree with. -

Crash
Crash, 1996, by David Croonenberg.
I even had a discussion with Lorenzo yesterday after seen the movie, because he supported that it was a good one and I disagreed. I didn’t (and don’t) like the main theme - Crash fetish - and thought the the movie exposed too much something that I’m not interested in knowing in depth.
But… after a good night of sleep and a fresh mind, a must agree with him: it is a good movie. Cronenberg was simply fantastic not only on the shootings and aesthetics, but on keeping you hypnotized seing something you don’t or shouldn’t want to see - like a car crash. -

Cidade de Deus
Cidade de Deus(City of God) 2002, by Fernando Meirelles.
A portrait of brazilian favela’s life, hierarchy and culture.
What to say… excellent. The movie is realistic and the actors performances are great.
Maybe it exceeded a bit with shooting effects. I think there was no need for that because the screenplay is already fantastic by itself. -

improved desktop by lorbus
Check out the idea of an Improved Desktop that lorbus posted today!
Pondering his post and my subsequent comment, it reminded me a lecture by the architect Marcus Novak that I saw in 1999 at Sao Paulo. He was presenting his concept of transArchitecture -”architecture beyond architecture, is an architecture of heretofore invisible scaffolds. It has a twofold character: within cyberspace is exists as liquid architecture that is transmitted across the global information networks; within physical space it exists as an invisible electronic double superimposed on our material world.”This is one of my favorites subjects! I’m open to discuss it…

soccer - part I
Each year in june there is a soccer championship between architecture-design-graphic studios from Milano. For the last 2 years the female championship has also been taking place. We the Lissoni Associati’s team are the champions for both years! It is true that where only three teams - Lissoni’s, Antonio Citterio’s and Matteo Thun’s, but we won anyway! :)
2003 championship it is going to be much more interesting, because there are 6 female teams: Lissoni; Citerio; Thun; Cibic&Partners+Sottsas Associati; Design Continuum; Stars.
Yesterday we just won our first match against the Stars (4-1). To be precise our first match was supposed to be last week against Thun, but we won by forfait (2-0).
Our next match: thursday Lissoni vs. Cibic+Sottsass. I’ll keep you update! -

mitla?
for those who might ask… YES, Mitla is my name!
It came from the Aztec ruins of Mitla in Oaxaca, Mexico.
The place was a ceremonial center initially dominated by the Zapotecs followed by the Mixtecs. Before going to USA in 1971 to do their master and doctorate studies, my parents spent a week in Mexico and visited Mitla. Even without knowing its meaning they decided that if they would have a daughter her name would be Mitla, because they simply loved both the place and the name.
I first knew the meaning as “morning star”, when my high school history teacher told me. How lovely!
Some years later I went on vacation to Mexico with my family. Of course Mitla was on our route… Then, visiting the place, for me and my parents surprise we discovered that the real meaning was “Place of the Dead”. wow…I’d rather be with the first meaning. But I can say that the second one could be useful to keep away unwanted conversation:
“Mitla? What a beautiful name. What does that mean?”
…More curiosities about my name?
Well… as far as I know I have never met another Mitla before. (If you know some, please tell her to contact me right away!)There is a Mitla Pass at the Sinai Peninsula, near Suez Canal, that was strategically important to the Sinai Campaign during the Suez War 1956 between Israel and Egypt.
I recently discovered that there is a far west Cartoon called Tex, created by the italian Giovanni Luigi Bonelli , in which the main character Tex Willer has an female enemy called… Mitla. She is a charming, fascinating, mysterious and dangerous… WITCH! pros

Oppening my mailbox today I got a nice surprise. Cynthia, a long time family friend, has just published in her website my wedding photos. She was a special guest that flew all the way from Washington to So Paulo just to take part in the event in sep 2002. When I was little my dad and I played bossanova together. He used to play the guitar so I could sing with my child like voice, which matches perfectly with the style.
Last month he came to visit us and we spent 10 nice days together. We reminisced old times…
Here is a version of the song “O Pato” (immortalized by João Gilberto in 1959) that he played, I sang and Lorenzo mixed and recorded in his computer.
Pure homemade quality!!! Enjoy. -
